Raphael: Sublime Poetry is poised to be one of the landmark art events of 2026 when it opens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on March 29 running through June 28. This will be the first truly comprehensive exhibition devoted to Raphael in the United States bringing together over 200 works by the Italian Renaissance master from public and private collections, presenting his renowned masterpieces alongside rarely seen treasures.
\n\n\n\nAcross Gallery 899 at The Met Fifth Avenue visitors will trace Raphael’s trajectory from his beginnings in Urbino through his formative Florentine period and into the decade he spent at the papal court in Rome. The show covers paintings, drawings, tapestries and decorative arts arranged in roughly chronological sections designed to reveal not just the showpiece works but the creative processes that cultivated them.

Highlights include The Virgin and Child with Infant Saint John the Baptist in a Landscape known as the Alba Madonna, La Fornarina, a mysterious nude portrait that received extensive attention in the exhibition and Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione widely regarded as one of the greatest portraits of the High Renaissance.

Beyond the masterpieces, Raphael’s nuanced handling of female subjects will be a thread throughout the presentation from his pioneering use of nude female models to his tender Madonnas. Recent scientific discoveries shedding light on his technique and working methods will also be on display highlighting his range from intellectual clarity to emotional resonance.

Curated by Carmen C. Bambach of The Met’s Department of Drawings and Prints this exhibition has taken years to assemble and draws on loans from dozens of museums, art institutions and private collectors from around the globe. It will not travel beyond New York making this a rare chance to see Raphael’s genius in full sweep in one place.
