Ignis: Capturing the Duality of Fire in Stunning Detail

Published Apr 25, 2025

Ignis, the latest experimental short film from London-based creative studio Optical Arts, is a mesmerizing exploration of fire and our connection to it. The project dives into how fire and combustion have shaped human progress, from powering engines to fueling innovation. But it also encourages us to think about the challenges these advancements bring, such as sustainability and the impact of technology on our planet. This dialogue between progress and responsibility is artfully expressed through a series of captivating visuals, placing fleeting flames inside fragile glass vessels to expose both their beauty and their volatility.

The technical brilliance behind “Ignis” makes it as much a feat of engineering as it is art. Creative Director Joe Jackson shared how the team carefully crafted their setup, using high-speed cameras to slow down the reactions to anywhere between 200 and 1,000 frames per second. These intricate moments of ignition, set off remotely to preserve safety (and a few arm hairs), transform a raw chemical process into something poetic and otherworldly. Even the soundtrack, inspired by the sharp “whoosh” as air rushes into the vacuum left by combustion, brings a tactile edge to the visuals.
